William Lawrence Bottomley
After a first introduction to the work of William Lawrence Bottomley, it may come as a surprise to a budding Virginia architecture enthusiast – given that close to half of his commissions were in the Richmond area – to learn that the society architect was a lifelong New Yorker, with offices on the Upper East Side. After attending Columbia University, in 1906 (only a few years before my grandfather would begin school there), he studied at the American Academy in Rome as well as Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and traveled extensively in Italy, France, and Spain.
Largely credited as a classicist, Bottomley is best known for his Colonial Revival residences, in Virginia, New York, and several others. Eleven of his commissions (8 in Virginia) are currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and he is generally regarded as one of the most acclaimed American architects of the 20th century.
